Sokoto State government’s plan to revitalise its leather industry received a boost when a team from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) began a seven-day assessment visit to the state.

The team, under the organisation’s Investment/Technology Promotion Office, will meet with stakeholders and other experts to map out strategies on how best to produce package and market Sokoto leather works for export.

Receiving the delegation in Sokoto, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said his administration is determined lay solid structures for the industrial development of the state.

“Sokoto leather is one of the best in the world. We are determined to properly nurture the sector to ensure our people benefit from it. Your coming here demonstrates our commitment to this objective. Be assured that we will do our bit to ensure the desired objective is achieved,” he said.

In her remarks, Head of UNIDO Nigeria Office, Mrs Adebisi Folashade, said the visit was part of measures to concretise previous agreements signed by her office and the Sokoto government.

She said during the visit, all stakeholders will make input to the committee for further action.

“At the end of this visit, a working document will be prepared for presentation to investors and other interest groups,” she added.
