Buhari assures investors of security of lives, investments

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in New York assured existing and potential investors in Nigeria of adequate protection of their lives, investments and property in the country.

Buhari gave the assurance at a bilateral meeting with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, on the sidelines of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to a statement issued in Abuja and signed by the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina.

The president said in the statement that the security situation in Nigeria was now much better and conducive for socio-economic activities, noting that the advances being made against Boko Haram insurgents had gone beyond degradation through just force of arms.

Buhari said that the de-radicalisation process was also ongoing; and that some measure of success was already being achieved. “Even suicide bombing is becoming rare as the local people are themselves rejecting indoctrination by the insurgents.’’

He stated that Nigeria was working hard to diversify the economy and expressed willingness to collaborate with South African businessmen, especially in the areas of mining and agriculture, for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

In his remarks, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa recalled his visit to Nigeria earlier this year, describing it as “very successful.”  He added that he was interested in the promotion of economic and trade partnerships between the two countries.

The statement said that at another bilateral meeting with President Macky Sall of Senegal, both Buhari and the Sall expressed happiness at the good cropping season being experienced in their countries.

They expressed the hope that the bumper harvests would ultimately translate to an enhancement of the quality of lives of their people.

“The two Presidents also reviewed the situation in Guinea Bissau and concluded that political leaders in the country need to make sacrifices to guarantee peace and development of the country,’’ the statement said.
