The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has ordered the re-opening of Nigeria’s land borders earlier shut due to the general elections.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, disclosed in a terse statement on Saturday that the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, gave the directive following the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections to next week Saturday,

The statement read: “Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), has ordered the re-opening of all the land borders earlier closed due to the postponement of the elections earlier scheduled for February 16, 2019.

“Nigeria Immigration Officers will continue their normal border control and patrol duties to ensure that all persons crossing our land, air and sea borders travel with a valid and genuine document and also pass through recognised routes.”

The service had earlier deployed its rapid response squad and other personnel numbering over 10,000 to the land borders and the hinterland as part of measures to prevent infiltration of the country by foreigners.
