Patito’s Gang reviews SERAP’s latest exposure of corruption

CORRUPTION – the monster that has consistently held down Nigeria’s development aspirations took the center stage in this week’s episode of Patito’s Gang broadcast on Channels Television Dstv network at 4:30pm on Saturday, September 9, 2017 with the repeat broadcast scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 at 8:30pm on the domestic service of Channels Television.
Senior Vice President CVL (Centre for Values in Leadership) Rasheed Adegbenro in a press statement, in the current episode, Patito’s Gang reviewed SERAP’s latest exposure of corruption in the power sector as well as United Nations poor rating of Nigeria on the global corruption index and concluded that outcome of both reports diminishes every Nigerian.
The panelists explained that for a very long time, the society perceived corruption to be simply financial related abuses whereas several other social ills such as injustice, poor judgment in resource allocation, favouritism, discrimination in employment opportunities etc are promoters of corruption which in many instances, created the fertile ground for corruption to grow.
The panel of discussants in the programme said that pervasive corruption has held hostage, Nigeria’s development objectives. They concluded that no facet of Nigeria’s socioeconomic and political fabric is immune from the debilitating effects of corruption.
Patito’s Gang members established that corruption grew tremendously after the overthrow of post-independence government by the military. The action of the military was said to have destroyed the secured tenure of public officers in the political and civil services through sudden retirements and at times without compensation. However, the panelists added that the military should not be solely held responsible for festering corruption because the return to democratic government in the past 16 years has recorded unprecedented growth in cases of corruption and abuse of office.
Patito’s Gang listed the media and the larger society as important pillars that could arrest the festering corruption tendencies in the country. The Gang members also provided measures that could cage corruption in the country.
