…And she died avoidable, painful death!

They say when life throws you lemons, make lemonade but I wonder what one makes when life throws you bullets.

Since the last Muslim holiday in July till 2nd of September this year; my life took a toll for the worst. You see, I have many children and I love them all. One of such is my angelic niece who I have had the privilege to be a big part of her life. She came home with a bloated tummy which we suspected was constipation which led us to run from pillar to post that ended on the 2nd of this month.

Deborah is my elder sister’s daughter. She was wonderful, fun loving, quiet, submissive, good natured, honest, trustworthy, hardworking, loyal to mention a few. She was a student of Queens College, Yaba Lagos going to SS3.

Deborah’s journey to the great beyond was fast forwarded by LUTH. We were referred there when she was finding it difficult to breathe. We chose to use the private emergency spill over just to ensure she was comfortable. We stayed there for almost 2 weeks with series of expensive tests which came forth with the same diagnosis Abdominal Tuberculosis. Tubes were inserted to drain fluid from her 2 lungs and her abdomen. They still wanted to carry out more tests which we were very open to.

Note that in all this, no treatment for the diagnosis had commenced until a fateful day, the Medical Director strolled in and took interest in her case. Consultants were called and her case reviewed. He asked that the treatment commences while their other suspicion is been investigated. He also recommended that she be transferred to the ward because it would be cheaper and she was going to stay a really long time. By this time we had accumulated a hefty bill.

Our nightmare began when she was moved to the ward. We regretted ever making that choice. There were 2 nurses and 1 doctor attending to 24 patients. Family members were not allowed to stay with their patients. Meanwhile, they didn’t have enough staff in that particular ward. She almost fell off the bed her first night there. The nurses were not even aware. A relative sneaked in, saw her and raised alarm.  They had to barricade the bed to prevent that. The next day we observed she was so uncomfortable. The tube attached to her right lung pulled out. We called the nurse and she said she was waiting for the Dr to come. We had to use the cotton wool to cover the hole so air doesn’t enter it before the Dr came and used plastered the hole. The chest surgeons sutured the hole and requested for an x-ray to be done.  The next morning without the knowledge of medical staff in the ward, the second tube fell off and it was until her Dad sneaked into the ward to check on her that she told him and that was when the journey to the end began.

The xray showed that there was fluid and air in her lungs. The surgeons were called and they said they were busy for that day and can’t attend to her till they were through. My Debosky started gasping for breath and became unconscious and still the Drs refused to come.  Even with calls from professional colleague explaining how terrible the situation was, they still didn’t show up. At 8:30pm 2nd of September 2016, Debbie breathed her last and left this wicked world filled with non challant Drs.

In our presence, 5 people died. There was an emergency and the doctor on call was so sluggish in getting there. The parent of the boy slapped him. We overheard a nurse telling him that he should know better than to treat anxious parents like that. While attending to him, there was no emergency tray prepared and ready in an emergency ward. They were running from pillar to post (probably trying to avoid being slapped) until the 400 level Unilag student died.

LUTH is a death trap and have no single regard for human lives.  They are just money-making venture not a hospital.

We laid Deborah to rest on Wednesday. It was a sad day. Mainly her friends from Queens College and the staff were there, non family and Church members. I wonder if she looked down and saw how much love we had for her and how relevant she was to us. But they say, God gives and He takes. In every situation we should thank God. We thank you for giving us 16 years of Deborah’s live. We also pray that the circumstances of her death will be visited upon all those that contributed to her untimely demise hundredfold.

I loved you my own Debosky! Rest in the bosom of Lord. Say hello to Grandpa. I hope he met you when you stepped into heaven’s gates.

Yet another Dame cut down in her prime – all thanks to a nation whose promises to its citizens have perpetually remained in its potentials for greatness, a paper tiger of all times, bankrupted by all its WASTED, WASTEFUL AND WASTING Generations. To this named departed Dame, there are hundreds others wasted in similar circumstances – unnamed, unsung, unreported, undocumented. The shame of a nation!
