World Safety Day: Damco restates commitment to workers’ safety

As part of efforts to promote safety culture in work places, Damco, the world’s leading providers of freight forwarding and supply chain management services. has pledged its continued commitment to safety in all of its facilities.

Mr. Sesan Ibitoye, the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Central Africa Area Damco stated this during the annual ‘World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2016’, which was held recently on the company’s premises in Lagos with the theme “Safe for me and safe for you”.

Ibitoye said the company places strong emphasis on safety among all its stakeholders and would advance the theme for this year’s celebration by stimulating awareness of, and reporting of ‘near misses’ in the facilities and subsequently implementing improvements that they point to.

He explained that “near miss” is an incident where no property was damaged and no personal injury was sustained, but where, given a slight shift in time or position, damage or injury could have occurred.

“It is only by being aware of “near misses” that preventive actions can be taken. If we do not know about ‘near misses’ that happened, how can we take actions to prevent an incident next time?” he said.

He highlighted the importance of the company’s safety culture as it provides insight and information needed for the curbing of accident. He listed the benefits of having a safety culture to include: pro-active resolution of hazards; increase in safety ownership; reinforcement of workers’ self-esteem, and exposure of valuable information, which might have been ignored.

Ibitoye urged all participants to imbibe safety culture in line with Damco health and safety policy which seeks to instil a culture of awareness, participation and continuous improvement in all aspects of Health and safety, through active and regular training.

Other dignitaries present at this year’s safety day celebration include, Mrs. Goodness Abara, Country Manager, Damco Logistics, Compt. M.A. Dalhat, the Comptroller of Customs, Lillypond Container Terminal and Mr. Kayode Daniels, the Business Lead, Lillypond Container Terminal among many others.
