Jose Mourinho who has just been confirmed as Man United manager will earn £10m a year, three-year contract. This is double the £5m-a-year salary paid to Van Gaal, his predecessor.
The former Porto, Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach, whose second spell in charge at Chelsea ended with him being sacked last December, will also secure bonuses of £5m and £2.5m respectively if he guides United to the Champions League and Premier League titles during the length of his contract.
Mourinho will take charge of United for the first time when the club face Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai on July 22 on the first leg of two game tour of China.
The self-styled Special One, speaking to United’s in-house television station MUTV, said he preferred to forget the turbulent post-Sir Alex Ferguson years under David Moyes and Van Gaal, and focus only on taking the club forward.
“We can look at our club in two perspectives – one perspective is the past three years and the other perspective is the history,” said Mourinho. “I prefer to forget the past three years and focus on the giant club I have in my hands now.”
“I feel great. I think it comes in the right moment of my career, because Manchester United is one of those clubs you really need to be prepared for, because it’s a giant club and giant clubs must be for the best managers and I think I am ready for it.
“I am proud, happy, honoured and I am ready for it. I like to work and I cannot wait until July 7 to go out on the pitch.
“The message to the fans is that I want to win and more than that I need the supporters and the players to feel that I say that, not just say it for the sake of saying it.
“I want to focus on the history of this giant club and give what I have and what I don’t have, so I will give absolutely everything to try to go into the direction we all want.
“I know what they [the fans] can give me and also I think they know what I can give them. Obviously, the most important thing is the players and the relation that I establish with them.
“But I think it’s very important and curious that I play so many times against Manchester United and I play so many times at Old Trafford with other clubs.
“There was empathy, no problems, and in fact I was pushed by that feeling to say sometimes things that my clubs were not happy with.
“I remember, for example, when I won at Old Trafford with Real Madrid and I said that the best team lost, and not many people were happy at Real Madrid!”
Has he got a message for the fans?
I think I know what they can give me. I think they know what I can give them.
The most important thing is the relationship with the players but the relationship [with the fans] is important.
