Sultan announces commencement of Ramadan

The head of Muslim community in Nigeria and the Sultan of Sokoto,  Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced the commencement of Ramadan from Monday the 6th of June, 2016. He made the announcement on Sunday night in Sokoto.

This announcement was made after the moon had been reportedly sighted in parts of Katsina and Zamfara State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The announcement in Nigeria came after the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia had announced that Monday, June 6 is the first day of Ramadan.

This was sequel to the confirmed seeing of the Ramadan crescent, the country’s foremost news outlet, Al-Arabiya News, reported.

The Al-Arabia report also stated: “the UAE, Jordan and the Palestinian territories have also confirmed seeing the Ramadan moon crescent and declared Monday as the first day of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims”.

According to the report, other Muslim majority countries like Indonesia have also announced the commencement of Ramadan on Monday.

Ramadan is the holy Islamic month when a 30-day fasting is observed by the Muslim faithful.
