PENGASSAN calls off strike

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike with immediate effect.

This is sequel to the decision taken at the end of its National Executive Council Meeting, which was which directed the immediate call off of the strike action having reviewed offers made by government during days of negotiations.

The union had earlier met with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige. Details of the agreements reached by the parties are fully known yet.

The unions declared strike action on July 7 over what it called unresolved issues affecting the smooth operation of the oil and gas industry.

What the union said it was demanding for bordered on issues that could strengthen the oil and gas industry and the country’s economy.

The backlog of cash call arrears for as far as 2014 which was said to affected the ability of the joint venture partners with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to discharge their obligations both to the industry and their workers, among others.
