
The Federal Government has resolved to train at least 500, 000 youths on agriculture and skill acquisition in a bid to provide food security.
The Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige said that the move would serve as an avenue to cut unemployment in the country.
He not noted that it was part of efforts y the government to diversify the Nigerian economy.
Already, the President of Fisheries Society of Nigeria, Dr Olajide Ayinla, has said that the society had affiliated with the government to develop the sector by inserting fishery into the school curriculum in order to enhance the knowledge among young people and create jobs.
Also he explained that Nigeria spends about $11 billion on the importation of wheat, rice, sugar and fish alone, based on this, the fishery society is collaborating with the government to encourage more local production.
According to him, “Nigeria is facing its worst economic crisis in years. The country, which is Africa’s biggest economy and an OPEC member state, depends on oil sales for about 95 percent of its foreign reserves.”
However, the fall in crude oil prices globally has hammered the economy.
The economic crisis has also worsened due to attacks on the country’s pipelines by a group known as the Niger Delta Avengers.
The government, last year granted bail out funds to some states to ease the crisis and again this year, as some states were still unable to pay workers’ salaries.
