Osun State’s 29th position in the 2016 WAEC’s rating, Ogbeni please —

By Moshood Isamotu

I know Ogbeni Raufu Aregbesola, the Governor of Osun State only fairly closely. He exemplifies activism and radicalism in appearance, conduct and speech. He talks with passion always and leaves no one in doubt about his sincerity especially in governing Osun State.

He would have perfectly been described as a proletariat if not for the position he holds. I believe him as an honest person and somebody that lives by example.

But, I am disappointed in the WAEC’s result rating of Osun State, being in the same category with Gombe, Zamfara in education?. This cannot be a State that hitherto excelled in anything academic. The verdict is clear to all but it may simply be a slip. We hope so.

The educational policies initiated by the Governor in the last three years generated well-intended and harmful brouhaha and counter-arguments from different camps. This is expected in a politicized environment.  Though, I believe he meant well but there is a disconnect which the WAEC’s result has confirmed. After all, what is the essence of the reform? The results have simply vilified him. At least, for now. And I also know some detractors are happy with that.

The Governor came up with far reaching policies all at once which do not resonate well with the key stakeholders, especially the teachers. This has proven costly. He neglected what private sector will take seriously – the human element/people factor. No buy-in of Govt policies and direction in addition to low motivation for policy implementors.

I also know that the man hardly listens to advice on issues he is convinced about. That is a hallmark of a good leader anyway. But, on this WAEC’s verdict, Ogbeni, please take an immediate, quick, comprehensive and critical review of education policies in the State and do a detour where necessary before the 29th position turns to 36th.

There is no need for foolhardiness on this issue. This is also a quality of a good leader. But let no detractor laugh off Aregbesola on this. He still means well.
