Kari qualified to regulate insurance industry, says CIIN

Following allegations from some aggrieved insurance operators, claiming the Commissioner for Insurance, Alhaji Mohammed Kari, has no insurance qualifications, hence, should not have been appointed to regulate the industry, the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), has now faulted the allegations, noting that Kari has the needed insurance qualifications to lead the National Insurance Commission.(NAICOM).

To this end, CIIN, which is the educational arm of insurance sector in the country has now made public, his certificates.

The Director-General, CIIN, Mr. Richard Borokini, in a letter dated September 19, 2016, stated that Kari is duly qualified as insurance professional.

“Further to the earlier notice issued on the above, on behalf of the President and the Governing Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, we want to confirm that Mohammed Uba Ahmed Kari is an Associate Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, (AIIN),” the letter reads.

The letter states further that Kari was elected in December 20, 1990 and was at the time the Executive Director, Technical of Niger Insurance.

Another letter from the Chartered Insurance Institute of London dated 1st December, 1987 says: “This is to certify that Mohammed Uba Ahmed Kari is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute by examination……Diploma given under the seal of the Institute at London this day: 1st December, 1987.”

Business 247 News Online finding shows that the false allegations emanated from some industry players who were not too comfortable with Kari’s style of regulating the insurance industry, thus, looking for all available means to question his integrity.

Since his appointment last year, he has had to engage in fierce battle with some insurers as well as brokers through his policies implementation, which some considered to be too harsh for the players in insurance sector of the economy.
