Odeneye canvasses for accounting prudency, receives ICAN Political Ambassador honour
A member of the Nigeria Federal House of Representatives, Honourable Odeneye Kehinde Olusegun, who was recently honoured by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) as ICAN political Ambassador has advocated for prudency and accountability by accountants as well as urged them to be an ambassador of the profession in all areas of their endeavours.
According to the institute, ICAN Ambassadors are representatives of the institute in areas of their practice, they are meant to uphold the integrity and interest of the institute.
It said the honour is in recognition of outstanding achievement in areas of probity and upholding the tenacity of accounting profession in following the accounting procedures and standards.
The ICAN Political Ambassador is an honour in recognition of distinguished individuals for their positive contributions to societal accounting development in their political spheres.
In his response, Hon. Odeneye representing Ijebu Central Federal Constituency which comprises of Ijebu Ode, Odogbolu and Ijebu North-East, said he was delighted with the honour as it shows that there are some organisation such as ICAN that still notice hard work, dedication and honesty which he stand for.
Odeneye stated that trust and accountability as well as probity is gradually becoming the missing link in our society which led to the increase in corruption that is now destroying the development of humanity
He said in his own little way of giving back to the society, he has consistently organised life changing empowerment programme that has changed the lives of over 1000 youths in his political constituency.
“We have trained people in various vocational skills and after their graduation, we empowered them. Some of them were well trained for over 18 months in tailoring, barbing and hairdressing among others.
“Also as a result of our passion for grassroots’ education, we have distributed over 200,000 exercise books to all pupils in Ijebu central federal constituency and many other philanthropic gestures”
“If we do not return back into the system what was drawn from the system, the system will collapse so when people get funds and do not return it, others will not be able to benefit and so the system will collapse. Monitoring efforts should be put in place to monitor the borrowing and return of the borrowed funds”
Hon. Odeneye urged the Federal Government to introduce interest free loan scheme in micro finance scheme for young graduates who are into vocations through the establishment of Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) as a way of tackling the rising wave of unemployment.
He said if a micro finance scheme is set up to give interest free loan to unemployed youths who are into vocations such as vulcanisers, shoemakers, automobile mechanics, hairdressers, barbers, tailors and caterers and those who want to venture into agriculture and farming among others would reduce restiveness and other social crimes in the country.
According to him, government alone cannot tackle unemployment in the country because there are various degree of unemployment. “We have people who are retrenched but are still able to work, we have graduates that are educated but nowhere to work, we have those who are into vocational training but have no financial backing to purchase working tools”.
He called for the reorientation of the youths to be self reliance rather than seeking 30 days make one month job because most of the youths wants quick money, they do not want to work before getting rich even if you try to provide work for most of them they are not ready to do it, they want to live in affluence without doing anything this is a serious challenge to the economy since the able bodied are not ready to contribute to the economy in terms of physical engagement hence all youths are now into gambling, betting, scam among others. The youths do not believe in government again what they want is free money from government which the government cannot provide.
