Mourinho would have won three titles at Man City – Drogba
The recently retired former Chelsea striker believes the Portuguese is not to blame for Manchester United’s recent struggles.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would have won the Premier League title “two or three times” if he was the boss of Manchester City, says his former star protégé Didier Drogba, Goal, reports.
The 40-year-old striker, who recently retired from football after a stint at USL club Phoenix Rising, believes the Red Devils’ struggles are not because of their Portuguese coach and should instead be blamed on the change in finances since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Drogba is also adamant Mourinho would have won more Premier League titles at City than Pep Guardiola if he was in charge of United’s neighbours.
“I think if you put [Mourinho] at Manchester City, he would have won the league twice, maybe two or three times,” Drogba told the Daily Mirror.
“You get criticism because you set a standard of winning, winning and winning and now you’re not winning or having the same results.
“He is still [at Manchester United]. You have to look at all the managers who were at Manchester United the last few years. Being manager after Sir Alex Ferguson is not easy and the finances that they had then are not the same as what they have now.
“People only pay attention to the best and he’s one of the best and that’s why he gets all of this.”
Mourinho brought Drogba to England in 2004 when he took the reins at Chelsea for the first time, with the duo winning three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and three League Cups during the Portuguese’s two spells at Stamford Bridge.
With United currently going through their worst top-flight start to a campaign in 28 years – in eighth position and 12 points adrift of leaders City – the serial trophy winner believes his former boss would be relishing the opportunity to restore the club to former glories and says he is altering his approach to get the best out of the team.
