CAN charges Buhari to keep his promises on credible elections

The Christian Association Nigeria (CAN) has called on  President Muhammadu Buhari to keep his promises of free, fair and credible 2019 elections in order to prevent violence and bloodshed.

The Christian body in a communique issued at the end of its first quarter meeting of 2019 in Abuja on Thursday, also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police and other security agents not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to rig the polls.

It noted that the resurgence of insecurity in the North-East portends danger for the forthcoming general elections if efforts at curtailing it were not stepped up.

The communiqué signed by CAN President, Rev.  Samson Ayokunle, read in part, “We commend President Muhammadu Buhari for the continuous reassurance that all will be done by the government to make the forthcoming general elections free, fair and credible.

“We at the same time implore Mr. President to make sure that all these promises are transformed into reality through concrete efforts that would prevent violence and other electoral malpractices.”

The Association observed that the efforts of the government in providing security was not yielding the needed results, pointing out that wanton killings have continued, especially in some states in the northern part of the country.
