Civil service is backbone of govt, Iworiso-Markson tells employed graduates

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson on Wednesday described the civil service as the main vehicle for the implementation of government programmes and policies.

According to him, without a functional civil service, government at every level will find it difficult to operate as they drive the process for the actualization of government’s mandates.

Iworiso-Markson was speaking in Yenagoa at the ongoing Orientation and Induction course for the 1,000 newly employed graduates of the Bayelsa state civil service.

He explained that due to the important role of the civil service in governance, the Restoration Government of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, has done so much to reposition it for efficiency and greater productivity.

Markson who described the new employees as beneficiaries of the recent reforms of the civil service, enjoined them to uphold the ethical standards and strict values that the civil service is known for.

The Information Commissioner said they were fortunate to have been selected amongst other applicants and urged them  to distinguish themselves in the discharge of their duties and also see the civil service as their own company.

While admonishing them to continue to show appreciation to the Dickson’s administration for creating the opportunity, he stressed that with diligence and hardwork which he noted are the hallmarks of excellence, they will rise to the pinnacle of their career.

He said, “You are the next generation of civil servants that will make the difference. Don’t take the civil service for granted. It is all up to you to make a difference in your life. Be disciplined and excellent; make up your mind to be outstanding. Life is about the decision you make, make the right decisions.

“I congratulate you for successfully scaling all hurdles to be gainfully employed. As a government we have done the best that we can to make the civil service more efficient and result oriented. Most of you are aware of the reforms we embarked on, it was all in the interest of the state and today you all are beneficiaries.

“I urge you to be punctual at work, dress officially and smartly to work, be dedicated to your jobs, have the spirit of team work and always make the right decisions and develop self confidence in the discharge of your work” he said.

The inaugural lecture on leadership which was organized by the Civil Service Commission and Office of the Head of Service ended on Thursday.
