Establishing more vocational centres will reduce extreme poverty — Economist

An Economist, Mr Titus Okuroumu on Thursday said the establishment of more vocational centres would go a long in tackling extreme poverty in Nigeria.

Okuroumu, a former CBN Director said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“Acquiring skills from such centres will empower many people and make them relevant in the society as it is the most reliable way of changing the economic lots of the people, especially in the hinterlands.

“The present existing vocational centres should be improved upon to produce robust skilled manpower for the country.

“If the centres are enhanced, they will boost the nation’s domestic capacity and reposition its economy.

“It will even help to reduce the influx of foreign artisans into the country,’’ he said.

NAN recalls that Mrs Sadiya Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian, Disaster Management and Social Development recently revealed that more than 90 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty.

Farouq disclosed this at a budget defense session before the House of Representatives Committee on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), while sharing the Federal Government’s resolve to lift 90 million Nigerians out of extreme poverty. (NAN)
