Ganduje seeks Assembly approval to borrow N15bn to fund free education  

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, has sought the approval of the Kano State House of Assembly  to borrow N15 billion from Guaranty Trust Bank (GT Bank) to fund the State’s free education programme.

The governor disclosed that if the loan is approved, each of the 44 local government will receive N340 million aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the free and compulsory education policy across the state.

Speaker of the Assembly, Abdulazeez Garba-Gafasa, read Ganduje’s letter seeking for the lawmakers’ consent to secure the loan on Monday.

According to him, the 44 local government areas in the state can access the loan if approved.

The letter stated that the decision to access the loan was to enable the local governments to ensure the success of the state government’s free and compulsory education policy.

However, the Speaker noted that the loan would be repaid within a period of 30 months with 15 per cent interest rate.

He further informed the House that the loan will be deducted from the local governments’ monthly federal allocations.

After reading the letter, the speaker presented it to the house committee on local governments, saying the committee will be supervised by the deputy majority leader, Kabiru Hassan-Dashi.

A 2-day deadline was also given the committee to present its report before the assembly.
