Operation Amotekun: Southwest speakers, AGs adopt uniform bill
A single legal document for the operation of the Amotekun security outfit has been adopted by the six Houses of Assembly in the Southwest on Wednesday, February 26, across the region.
In a report, by The Nation, Bamidele Oleyelogun, the speaker Ondo state House of Assembly disclosed this information after a meeting with all six the attorneys-general from all the states in Ibadan.
Oleyelogun, who also doubled as the chairman of the conference of Speakers of Southwest States, said the uniformity of the bill would ensure synergy of operation in terms of working relationship, intelligence sharing, training, and others among the Amotekun Corps in the six southwest states.
The meeting between Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti states was convened to harmonise the different suggestions, observations, and criticisms into the proposed law.
The Ondo speaker went on to note that until an acceptable law, which will give Operation Amotekun full legal backing is passed the conference would not rest.
At the meeting observations, suggestions and clear conflicting areas identified during the public hearings conducted by each state were identified by the speakers and AGs.
Then a clause-by-clause deliberation of the issues raised at public hearings. Those present at the meeting included speakers of all six states, attorneys-general, majority leaders, clerks of the six Houses of Assembly, directors of legal departments and chairmen, and House committees on security.
The bill has been given an accelerated consideration by the Houses of Assembly with a view to giving legal backing to the corps.
