Gender-based Violence: Ekiti gov.’s wife wants better accommodation for female students
Wife of Governor of Ekiti, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, has called on the management of tertiary institutions to make female students’ accommodation a priority to check the problem of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Fayemi made the call on Tuesday during an advocacy visit on GBV to Olumilua Bamidele University, Ikere-Ekiti and Crown Polytechnic, Odo, in Ado-Ekiti.
She said though priority should be given to the provision of safe accommodations for both male and female students, extra measures must be taken to protect female students.
Fayemi also urged managements of tertiary institutions not to treat sexual assaults on female students with levity.
She said cases of sexual assaults should always be reported, while the identity of the victim(s) protected and offenders arrested and prosecuted.
The governor’s wife noted that the advocacy on GBV was a pilot project in Ekiti, Edo, Niger and Abia states with the aim of putting an end to sexual harassment.
In their separate remarks, the Vice- Chancellor of the university, Prof. Victor Adeoluwa and the Rector of polytechnic Odo, Ado Ekiti, Mr Kolawole Ajisola, promised to adopt holistic approach to address the menace of sexual harassment in both campuses.
