Women’s World Cup: We’ll show the world what Nigeria can do –Ohale

Super Falcons midfielder Osinachi Ohale has said that she and her teammates want to show the world what Nigeria can do at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ohale, who won the player of the match award, dismissed fears that she sustained an injury in the 3-2 win over Australia at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Thursday came from a goal down to hand Women’s World Cup co-host Australia a crushing defeat in their second group match at the Lang Park Stadium in Brisbane.

Emily van Egmond had put the Matildas in front in the first minute of first half added time.

But just when it seemed like the Aussies were going to go into the break ahead, Uchenna Kalu restored parity for the Nigerians in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Ohale put the Super Falcons in front on 65 minutes before Asisat Oshoala who came into the fray as a 64th minute substitute capitalised on a mix-up in the Matildas’ backline to make it 3-1.

Alanna Kennedy then pulled one back for Australia in the 10th minute of second half stoppage time but it was too little too late for the World Cup co-host as Nigeria held on for victory.

Ohale who appeared to have picked up an injury in the process of scoring Nigeria’s second goal, however, allayed such fear while speaking to reporters afer the game.

“I think I am very much okay as I did not pick up any injury, yes I am fine,” she told UK-based Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana at the Lang Park Stadium.

On what changed in the team during the build-up to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Ohale said she and her fellow team-mates decided to give their very best.

“We all agreed that we did not perform well at last year’s African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) but prior to the World Cup, we all told each other that we needed to step up our game,” she said.

“We decided that we would make a name for ourselves in Australia and it is not going to be the same thing as usual and also to show the world what we have and what we can do.”
