FG will stand by Akinkunmi’s family, proud of contribution to Nigeria’s unity
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday said that the Federal Government was proud of the legacy of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi towards Nigeria’s unity.
Akinkunmi had, in 1958, designed the Nigerian flag. The minister promised that the Federal Government would stand by his family. Idris made the remark during a condolence visit to the deceased’s family at his residence in the Koola area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
“We are here, today, on behalf of the President to condole with the family of this very iconic individual, Pa Akinkunmi. We are aware that he is an individual who designed one of the most powerful symbols of our national existence, sovereignty, and our independence.”
The minister said Akinkunmi’s legacy rests on creation of the national flag, which he described as a symbol of unity and independence that has endured through the decades; “a symbol we are yet to find replacement for and that we hope will continue to remain a rallying point for all Nigerians wherever they may be.”
He said President Tinubu, recognising the global impact of Akinkunmi’s passing, directed the Federal Government’s delegation to convey Nigeria’s collective grief and gratitude to the family.
“Perhaps, when he was designing the national flag, he did not know how powerful it would be as a symbol of peace and unity, that all of us pray for in this country.” He said Akinkunmi’s legacy finds resonance in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for national rebirth and reorientation.
The minister had, earlier paid a visit to Governor Seyi Makinde at his office. He was received by Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, who described the exploit of the late patriot as significant to national cohesion.
