Family announces burial plans for Nigerian student who died aboard Egypt Air
The family of late Remilekun Toyosi Meshioye, a Nigerian student who died aboard Egyptair in Cairo on her way to London, has rolled out her burial plans.
The family said her remains will arrive Lagos on Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission on Monday, the family said it has rolled out a three-day burial programme.
It was reported in September that Meshioye fell sick mid-flight and died in the hospital. The family of the deceased were also reported to be seeking answers and assistance in repatriating her remains to Nigeria.
Meshioye’s elder sister, Mrs. Olufunmilola Olaniyi-Alabi, while narrating what happened said the family tried to call the airline’s customer care and all other contact phone details on their website but got no response.
According to the burial programme being coordinated by Olaniyi-Alabi, after the body arrives Lagos on Wednesday, there will be service of songs at the Winners Chapel Ogba, Lagos on Thursday by 4pm while the burial will hold at Matori Cemetery Ladipo near Oshodi Bus Terminus, Lagos at 10am on Friday.
Olaniyi-Alabi said the family has decided to repatriate the body of Meshioye for burial following the refusal of Egypt Air management to accept full responsibility to what happened to its passenger.
She said the family has written series of petitions to Egypt Air and its management but has refused to even condole them up till this moment. She also noted that the airline has refused to accept the responsibility of bringing the corpse back, which she states is not in line with global aviation rules.
According to the statement, the Egypt Air management has also refused to respond to letter written to it by NIDCOM to seek for clarification on the matter and do the needful for the family.
The Chairman/CEO, NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, offered her condolences to the family over the unfortunate incident and prayed to God to comfort them especially her aged father and siblings and grant the deceased eternal peaceful rest.
