Breaking News: “Fuel subsidy is back”, Obasanjo alleges in viral interview

Former Military Head of State and President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has faulted the removal of fuel subsidy by Tinubu’s government.

In a recent interview, Obasanjo argued that Tinubu’s government should have first considered the hardship the subsidy removal would cause people and how to ameliorate them.

Obasanjo condemned the style adopted by Tinubu and maintained that with the current inflation rate, the subsidy that was removed is not gone but has returned.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his inaugural address on May 29, 2023, had declared that fuel subsidy “is gone.”

This development has led to a hike in the pump price of petrol from about N200 to over N600 per litre.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo faulted the manner in which the subsidy was removed by the government.

According to the former president, the government should have implemented some measures before the subsidy removal.

Obasanjo, however, explained that the subsidy has “come back” due to the inflation rate.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Not just wake up one morning and say you removed the subsidy. Because of inflation, the subsidy that we have removed is not gone. It has come back,” Obasanjo said.

The former president also highlighted the need for investor confidence in Nigeria, stating, “You have to go from a transactional economy to a transformational economy.”

Address demands of protesters, NMA urges Tinubu

The FCT Chapter of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has urged President Bola Tinubu to address issues which led to the nationwide protest.

The Chairman of the association, Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

According to him, the issue that led to the protest is hunger, occasioned by cost of food that is bitting Nigerians hard.

”We are calling on the president to make the economy friendly so the Nigerian will be able to put food on their table,” he said.

He also urged Tinubu to review the security situation in the country, which he said was seriously affected so many things.

“In recent times, President Tinubu’s desire to rescue the country from so many issues that have bedeviled it had thrown severe hardship on Nigerians.
