Tinubu swears in Justice Kekere-Ekun as new CJN

President Bola Tinubu on Friday administered the oath of office to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, formally inaugurating her as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The swearing-in ceremony, which took place at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, was a testament to the country’s enduring commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.

As the clock struck 11:40 am, Justice Kekere-Ekun, flanked by President Tinubu and other dignitaries, stepped forward to take the oath of office.

With her right hand placed on the Bible, she solemnly swore to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to discharge her duties as Chief Justice without fear or favor.

The oath, administered by President Tinubu, marked the beginning of a new chapter in Justice Kekere-Ekun’s illustrious career, as she assumed the mantle of leadership in Nigeria’s judiciary.

The ceremony was attended by a gathering of esteemed guests, including senior government officials, judicial officers, and representatives of the legal profession.

The atmosphere was filled with a sense of expectation and optimism, as the nation looked to Justice Kekere-Ekun to build on the legacy of her predecessors and steer the judiciary towards greater heights.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment as Chief Justice comes at a critical juncture in Nigeria’s history, as the country navigates the complexities of democratic governance and the rule of law.

Her wealth of experience, spanning over three decades, has equipped her with the requisite expertise and wisdom to lead the judiciary in addressing the myriad challenges that lie ahead.

The outgoing Chief Justice, Ariwoola, who assumed office on June 27, 2022, bowed out on Thursday, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years. His tenure was marked by significant reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system.

As Justice Kekere-Ekun signed the oath register, symbolizing her formal assumption of office, President Tinubu congratulated her on her appointment and expressed confidence in her ability to lead the judiciary to greater heights.

The President’s remarks were echoed by other dignitaries present, who hailed Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment as a testament to her exceptional qualities and a reflection of the nation’s commitment to gender equality and inclusivity.

While Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate, her swearing-in ceremony marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s judicial history, as the nation looked to her to provide leadership and guidance in the pursuit of justice and the rule of law.

As she embarks on this noble journey, the nation wishes her wisdom, courage, and strength in the discharge of her duties as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.
