NCC pledges to consolidate on previous successes
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has pledged that in 2025, it will build on successes recorded in the previous years in its regulatory mandate, as it will specifically strive to improve on its achievements in the just past year 2024.
The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida made the pledge and also disclosed that one of the projections of the Commission for year 2025 is the provision of coverage maps from crowd-sourced data that will show the performance of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
According to a post from the verified official X handle of the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani and published by Newsdesk Africa, the NCC-boss further noted that the provision of coverage map is to enable users of mobile networks services ascertain the most efficient network in their coverage area.
According to him, “NCC will in 2025 focus on building transparency, which will spring up more robust and healthier competition in the industry. I am really optimistic. We are going to build on the small gains we made in 2024.
“Now that we have laid some of the necessary foundations, we are going to see a lot more transparency to help drive competition and service delivery amongst operators. We are also going to be providing coverage maps towards the end of the year, from crowd-source data.
“This is not going to be simulated data. It is going to be actual performance data, which will show you the best network in your area.
“No longer will you need to ask the man or woman nearest to you. You can actually come to the NCC’s website and look at the data for yourself”, the NCC-boss further assured.
It would be recalled that the Commission had last year, as part of measured to boost security in the country, carried out the National Identity Number NIN-Subscribers Identity Module SIM card linkage in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), which led to the deactivation of many unlinked mobile phone lines. Stakeholders have described this programme as a key milestone achievement by the Commission, as the exercise was in tandem with Federal Government’s policy on date protection to curb insecurity in the country.
Another strategic success recorded by the Commission was its synergy with the Office of the National Security Adviser, which led to the signing of the Executive Order by President Bola Tinubu, which designated all telecommunication assets as Critical National Information Infrastructure with a view to protecting them in order to boost quality service delivery.
Dr. Maida, while reflecting on these modest achievements in 2024, noted that they provide lots of opportunities for the country’s digital economy and national security, adding that these achievements have laid a solid foundation for future growth and development of the nation’s digital economy as well as improving the security architecture.
