Lagos Assembly reaffirms Obasa’s removal as Speaker

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.
In a statement signed by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on Thursday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly said Obasa’s removal was conducted lawfully, in line with constitutional provisions.
After their appearance at the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shangisha, Olukayode said that the lawmakers’ decision adhered strictly to the 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution and the Powers and Privileges Act.
They referenced Sections 92 and 96, which outline the procedures for electing and removing a Speaker, stressing that due process was followed.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos,” the lawmakers stated.
“Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution.”
They also commended the DSS for its professionalism and ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement, as all the detained lawmakers have since been released.
Reiterating their commitment to legislative duties, the assembly called on all stakeholders, including the executive and the public, to respect the sanctity of legislative processes and avoid undue interference.
Obasa was removed by 35 out of the 40 members of the assembly on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and mismanagement of funds.
The embattled ex-speaker was immediately replaced with his former Deputy, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda.
