NEMA, NCC strengthen partnership to enhance emergency response services

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) are deepening their collaboration to transform emergency response coordination and delivery nationwide.

By harnessing Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure—especially the national 112 emergency line—the partnership seeks to accelerate the flow of critical information and improve disaster management efficiency, ensuring seamless access to emergency services for all citizens.

To solidify this alliance, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, visited the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, at the Commission’s Abuja headquarters on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Mrs. Umar stressed the need to enhance communication between the two agencies, particularly in upgrading emergency call systems, advancing disaster risk reduction initiatives, and expanding early warning mechanisms.

A statement by NEMA’s Press Unit Head, Manzo Ezekiel, quoted the DG commending the NCC for its efforts in operationalizing the 112 emergency number. She also called for better interoperability between the NCC’s systems and NEMA’s emergency platforms to ensure faster, more coordinated responses to distress calls.

Dr. Maida reiterated the NCC’s dedication to supporting NEMA’s objectives, highlighting the lifesaving potential of robust communication technology during emergencies. He also emphasized the importance of public education on the proper use of emergency contact numbers.

Both agencies agreed that a streamlined communication network is vital to reducing disaster impacts and pledged to work together to bolster Nigeria’s emergency preparedness and resilience.
