Nigeria faces milk deficit, imports from Europe …Spends $430m on importation

According to the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) exporters’ guides on Nigeria, the country was in short supply of about 700,000 metric tons.
The country’s dairy sector currently meets less than 50per cent of domestic demand of 1.3 million metric tons. (600,000 metric tons, compared to demand of 1.3million metric tons.
It was learnt that the country has imported some 186,258 metric tons of the commodity valued at $430,442,238 between 2013 and 2015.
In 2013, the country imported, 27, 284 tons; 2014, 34,119 and 2015, 22,673 of skim powder milk. During the period, it imported 102, 192 metric tons of whole milk powder.
Importers have been constrained by foreign exchange policy of the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN), to ship the product to the country despite the fact that the country is regarded as a massive market for European milk with the current price of the product selling at $2,300 per metric ton.
