COVID-19 : Don urges FG to monitor distribution of palliatives

Prof. Yusuf Lanre Badmus of the  University of Ilorin, has urged the Federal Government to closely monitor the distribution of COVID-19 palliatives to vulnerable Nigerians to ensure equitable distribution.

Badmus, a professor of  Islamic Studies, who spoke with newsmen in Ilorin on Monday, noted that the committees charged with the distribution of palliatives in some parts of the country were not handling the exercise with honesty.

He said that some food items given out to some vulnerable persons would not sustain them thorough the duration of the mandatory lockdown period.

“Committees delegated by the government to distribute the palliatives should be monitored because not all of them are honest and sincere.

“The government needs to monitor the committees on their distribution pattern so that the food items will get to the intended beneficiaries in appreciable quantity and quality,”  he said.

Badmus condemned a situation where 10kg of rice was given to more than 30 persons and advised the committee members to discharge the assignment with the fear of God.

He also urged wealthy Muslims to assist the vulnerable during this period, instead of spending money on Umrah (lesser Hajj) and Hajj, which Allah enjoined on Muslims to perform once in a life time. (NAN)
