Mining and Geosciences Society pledges commitment towards development of profession

Mr Gbenga Lufadeju, the Chairman, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society  (NMGS) Lagos Chapter, has called for establishment of satellite offices of the Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geosciences (COMEG) within the country and most importantly in the major four geographical zones.

Lufadeju made the call during the visit of COMEG Registrar Prof. Zachaeus Opafunso and his Entourage to NMGS in Lagos.
He said that COMEG as the only regulatory body for all professionals and firms in the Geosciences, Mining Engineering, and Metallurgy in Nigeria, could take up the task in a bid to promote the profession.
Accordind to him, nationwide trainings can be organised in conjunction with the other professional groups.
Lufadeju stated that COMEG was established through ACT No 40 of 1990 (now ACT CAP C 33 LFN,2004) and was inaugurated on 12th September, 2002.
He added that the major action thrust of COMEG was to regulate and control the practices of professionals in the fields of Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Mining Engineering and Metallurgy among others.
According to him, it is evident from records that all these class of professionals contribute immensely to the progress and development of our Nation
 The  NMGS Chairman, therefore, urged  all NMGS corporate members to ensure that they register with the regulatory body- COMEG.
Lufadeju welcomed the Registrar of COMEG and his entire entourage and assured them commitment of NMGS to support the Council in any areas within its capacity.
“We warmly welcome the dynamic and enterprising Registrar of COMEG and his entire entourage to Lagos State and in particular on his visit to the NMGS family in the State.
“We want to state that for all NMGS corporate members, it is an obligation and a prerequisite to be registered with COMEG. This is compulsory for all those who want to practice and work as professionals in Nigeria. Also for expatriates working in the Extractive Industry in Nigeria are also eligible and compulsory to register with COMEG.
“The advantage and benefit of registering with COMEG is that it makes one professional practice lawful, coupled with the aim of eliminating quacks from the sensitive and knowledge based extractive industry.
“We want to assure of our Chapters commitment to encourage our NMGS and other professional bodies to be registered and be financially committed and be up to date,” he said.
