Strike: NANS begs FG, ASUU to resolve impasse
The National Association of Nigerian Students – Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC), Ondo State chapter has begged the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their dispute in the interest of the students.
It said the incessant strike action was having a toll on the academic pursuit of students in the public tertiary institutions.
The student body said students were made to suffer the consequences of strikes embarked upon by ASUU.
Chairman, NANS JCC, Comrade Surprise Omotoso, who spoke in Akure, said it was sardonic that the government and ASUU were playing cat and mouse games and putting students at risk.
He said: “A student that is supposed to spend four years in the university now ends up spending six to seven years. Even after wasting time on students, there is no guarantee that they will get a job.
“So we are urging the government and ASUU to settle whatever dispute between them. They shouldn’t use their issues to affect our own life because we believe when two elephants fight the grass suffer. So we don’t want to suffer for what we don’t know.
“We are begging the federal government and ASUU to come to our aid by resolving their issues.”
The NANS JCC also gave Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu two- a week ultimatum to revert or review downward tuitions fees paid in all the state-owned tertiary institutions.
Omotoso accused Governor Akeredolu of not fulfilling the agreement it reached with the body to provide palliatives to mitigate the impact of tuition increase, such as scholarship programs, infrastructure improvements, among others.
Ondo Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said it was proper that the institutions engage stakeholders to explain the philosophy behind certain far-reaching decisions, including the subject matter.
