Unilag sets in motion activities to mark Diamond Jubilee

The University of Lagos (Unilag) is set to celebrate its 60th Anniversary.

The University, which commenced teaching (for its first batch of twenty-eight (28) pre-clinical students) on October 3, 1962; is today a leading provider of quality tertiary education in Nigeria, leaving ineffaceable marks in academic and professional fields in both private and public sectors across the world.

From its humble beginnings with just three Faculties and a Medical School, the University currently has twelve (12) Faculties, a Distance Learning Institute, a School of Postgraduate Studies, nineteen (19) Research Centres, three (3) Research Institutes and three (3) Centres of Excellence, thus consolidating its position as an international trailblazer in the area of teaching, research, entrepreneurship and innovation.

A statement from the Information Unit of the university read, “The 60th Anniversary, which has the theme: “Eyes on the Future”, is an avenue for the University to return to its beginning, reflect on losses and consolidate on gains, ahead of the future.

“It will be commemorated with a series of year-long events ranging from academic fora to social and cultural events, to celebrate the extraordinary feats of the University and inspire members of the University community to endow funds to support teaching, research and scholarship; as well as invest in faculties, departments and centres through the University’s $500million endowment scheme and P3P initiative (“Pick a Project” “Pick a Programme” and “Pick a Person”).

“These events will bring together students, staff, alumni, partners, friends, and other stakeholders to mark this very significant milestone for the University.

The University Community and the general public are invited to join the University to celebrate its rich past and achieve its goals in the years ahead with Eyes on the Future.
