Wike speaks on Tinubu’s victory

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Friday expressed his delight that a Southerner, Bola Tinubu, emerged Nigeria’s next president after the 2023 election held last Saturday.

Wike spoke in Oyo State where he was invited by his ally, Governor Seyi Makinde, to commission a project, Wike said: “I am happy he (Makinde) is one of those that made history by making sure that power shift to the south.

“I have told people that those who fight for change, who fight for revolution may not be directed beneficiaries of that fight but today, history has it that all of us now are aware that when power finishes from the south, it will go to the north; when it finishes from the north, it will come to the south.

“So, it does not need to be written in the constitution at all before it is implemented. And I thank Nigerians for standing firm to see that this issue materialize,” Wike said.

Wike is believed to be the leader of the G5, a group of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors who are aggrieved with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the party’s leadership.

Besides Wike and Makinde, other members of the group are governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

The group fell out with Atiku for reneging on the alleged promise to ensure the exit of Iyorchia Ayu as the Chairman of the party. They wanted Ayu to be replaced by a southerner as a condition to support Atiku.

Ayu and Atiku are both northerners, an arrangement the group said was unfair and unjust to the South.
