Presidency confirms Sylva’s resignation as Minister of State Petroleum Resources

The Presidency on Friday confirmed the resignation of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.

Sylva had tendered his resignation ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Bayelsa State next month.

Officials at the Petroleum Resources ministry had disclosed that the rule of APC requires that Sylva resign about 30 days before the April 14, 2023 governorship primary.

Recall that Sylva was Governor of Bayelsa State, where he served for one term between 2008 and 2012.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, Bashir Ahmad in a post on Twitter confirmed Sylva’s resignation.

The aide confirmed that Sylva resigned his appointment to contest in the next Bayelsa governorship election.

Ahmad wrote, “Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, and former Bayelsa state governor, H.E. Timipre Sylva, has resigned his appointment to contest in the next Bayelsa governorship election”.

Recall that Sylva last year resigned as Minister after declaring his intention to contest in the APC Presidential primaries.

But a few days later, he withdrew the letter despite attending a valedictory session with President Buhari alongside other Ministers who contested the primaries.
