Buhari says new Customs Act will boost efficiency

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said that the new Customs Act, which he recently signed into law, will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of customs administration.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari disclosed this while unveiling the new Customs headquarters, named CUSTOMS HOUSE, in Abuja on Tuesday.

“We are all aware of our Customs Service’s challenges, particularly the fragile borders that provide opportunities for illicit activities. The recent increase in transnational crimes, smuggling, and security threats necessitates a robust and agile customs administration. I am fully conscious of these challenges and the urgent need to address them.

“I am pleased to highlight that in line with our commitment to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our customs administration, I recently signed the Customs Bill into law. The new act, a product of extensive consultations and deliberations, represents a significant step towards modernizing our customs operations, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and promoting trade facilitation. It is a testament to our commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, attracting investments, and driving economic growth,” the President said.

In April 2023, Buhari assented to the reformation of Nigeria’s Administration and Management Act of Customs and Excise.
