UNILORIN opens portal to admit Nigerian students evacuated from Sudan

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has opened its portal for consideration of admission of Nigerian students returning from war-torn Sudan.

The institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, announced the development in a statement on Thursday.

The university said interested students should check “inter-university transfer” on its website and apply appropriately.

“For the attention of Nigerian student returnees from Sudan. From Thursday, May 25 go to the UNILORIN website www.unilorin.edu.ng and check inter-university transfer and apply as appropriate,” the statement reads.

“If there is any difficulty, kindly contact the university management.’’

Akogun said the institution has made provision in its existing programmes for the students evacuated from Sudan.

He added that Wahab Egbewole, the vice-chancellor, had directed the opening of the undergraduate portal for the commencement of the process.

The development came after the House of Representatives asked the Federal Government to direct all tertiary institutions to absorb Nigerian students fleeing the war in Sudan.

Sada Soli, a lawmaker from Katsina, who moved the motion, said the measure became imperative as there was no end in sight to the war in Sudan.

“In the face of the Ukraine/Russia war, there was a similar intervention whereby Nigerian students who fled from those countries were absorbed into tertiary institutions in Nigeria to continue their various educational programmes through the window — higher institutions transfer programme,” he had said.
