Niger Delta students back EFCC on anti-corruption fight
The Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG) has expressed support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its quest to rid the country of economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.
This disclosure was made on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 when a delegation of the union, led by its President, Comrade Scott Ogunseri visited the corporate headquarters of the EFCC in Jabi, Abuja on a courtesy visit.
Ogunseri said that the union decided to partner with the EFCC to keep the campaign against economic and financial crimes running, in order to reduce the number of students involved in cybercrime
“We have designed our plans for the students’ community in our region and decided to come up with a security summit to campaign against social vices, especially cybercrime. We understand that students and youths are guilty of this offence, and it pains us that they indulge in such acts. So we felt it would be nice for us to keep the campaign running. And we are sure with this project, we will be able to reduce the number of students involved in cybercrime,” he said.
Responding, Secretary to the Commission, Mohammed Hammajoda commended the students for the initiative, urging them not to relent in the good work they are doing to help the Commission fight corruption. “What you are doing is very important and commendable. It is a laudable exercise, continue to do it, nobody would pay you except the Almighty in this struggle. Thank God that, at your level, you are able to identify these vices and note them to be bad for the development of this country”.
Hammajoda encouraged the students to always reach out to the Commission when doing their campaigns against cybercrime, assuring them of the EFCC’s assistance with resource persons whenever possible.
In a related development, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has charged students across the world, to get involved in the anti-corruption fight of the Commission by preaching the ills of corruption to their parents and peers.
He gave the charge on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 when students of Purplins School Mararraba, Nasarawa State came on a study tour to the Commission
Olukoyede, who was represented by Head of EFCC Radio, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, DCE Nwanyinmma Okeanu charged the students to spread the anti-corruption message to their peers and everyone in the society.
“Take the message, it is not just for now, it is for tomorrow. It is not just for you, it is also for your siblings, your parents and everyone. Preach to them the ills and the damage every little act of corruption does to our economy and our country. The fight against corruption should involve every patriotic citizen,” she said.
Speaking further, the Chairman noted that the EFCC was specifically established to ensure that economic and financial crimes do not destroy the country but to make our nation conducive for the prosperity of all.
Chris Oluka, Head, Creative Communication Unit of the Commission, spoke on attitudinal change in the fight against corruption and urged students to focus their minds and attitudes in the right direction.
“Changing attitude involves building discipline and knowing what to do at the right time. No miracle or angels would come and help us fight corruption. Therefore, we must join hands to end it and make our country great,” he said.
Aisha Mohammed, Head of Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit of the Commission, noted that the EFCC placed high value on the youth, given that they are the leaders of tomorrow. “Here in EFCC ,we value you and make you know how important you are in the fight against corruption. We understand that we cannot win the fight alone without your support; you are the future leaders of this country, so we must ensure we enlist you in the fight so that you can stand and fight for the future you desire,” she said. Also speaking on the effects of cybercrime on today’s youths, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, CSE, Daniel Nwaka urged the students to resist the use of cyberspace for committing crimes.
